Training vs. Tutoring: What’s the Difference?
Brain training is like practicing the piano. Tutoring is like hearing a lecture about the piano. Brain training is like going to the gym. Tutoring is like reading a text-book about the muscles. Brain training changes and strengthens. Tutoring reinforces facts and information.
If your child is struggling in school, it’s probably not because they aren’t getting information. It’s more likely because when their brain comes in contact with that information, there are weaknesses that hinder its ability to process the information, or to remember the information, or to focus on the information, or to apply logic to the information. These abilities are what we call cognitive skills – and if those skills are weak, learning can be next to impossible – kind of like trying to lift a big heavy box without muscles.
Our goal, at LearningRx, is to strengthen those “brain muscles” so that the information learned at school (or even in a tutoring setting) can actually be assimilated and used. Our brain training programs are designed to help those with cognitive deficiencies “train the brain” and gain the brain strength they need to accomplish the tasks set before them both in school and in life.
Tutoring won’t do that. Tutoring is useful for going over information that was missed the first time – brain training will make sure your child doesn’t miss it the first time.

My daughter went to Sylvan for 3 years! I am a busy single mom and thought I was doing the right thing for my daughter by going to Sylvan and having tutoring for her. She was not making progress though. It seemed she struggled with the same things year in and year out. She had trouble in reading and comprehension and Sylvan said they were working on those areas.
I have a friend who took her daughter (hers is in 5th grade, mine in 4th) to Learning Rx and in just a half a year, she improved dramatically in reading, math, and most of her subjects. The girl had been on an IEP for 5 years and after Learning Rx she came off of it.
We are only a month in to the Learning Rx program, but already I am seeing more results than we did in three years at Sylvan.
