“I don’t want to worry her with the truth…”
“Had lunch with my mom today. She asked me how Jake is doing… how the last school year ended. I told her he was doing a little better. Better than what, I don’t know. I don’t want to worry her with the truth about how Jake is really doing, but she can probably tell I’m worried anyway. He’s going to be 10 in a few weeks, and it sort of feels like a mile-marker. He’ll be going into middle school before we know it. I don’t want to think about what will happen then. And I really don’t want to think about high school… adding hormones on top of the trouble he’s having with studies and grades and social interaction… he’s depressed already, and he’s only 10! It’s just scary. I know Micheal is really stressed out about it too – he’s imagining us supporting Jacob when he’s grown up because he can’t get a job. Surely that won’t happen. Will it?”
